The Trip to the Mound: Baseball's Most Hallucinogenic No-Hitter

A Legendary High. On June 12, 1970, Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dock Ellis achieved the unthinkable: he threw a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres while reportedly under the influence of LSD. Ellis had lost track of the days and thought it was his day off, but after a frantic realization and a flight from LA to San Diego, he took the mound in a full-blown psychedelic state. Throughout the game, the ball reportedly changed sizes, the catcher's fingers (wrapped in reflective tape) looked like they were glowing, and Ellis even hallucinated that Jimi Hendrix was at the plate swinging a guitar! Despite walking eight batters and at one point thinking the home plate umpire was Richard Nixon, he didn't allow a single hit. It remains the most bizarre, colorful, and 'trippy' milestone in Major League Baseball history!
