On June 25, 1951, CBS made broadcasting history by airing Premiere, the first-ever commercial color TV program. Hosted by Ed Sullivan and featuring stars like Faye Emerson, it was intended to be a vibrant revolution in entertainment.

However, there were two hilarious catches:

• The 'Stealth' Broadcast: While there were over 10 million television sets in America at the time, the CBS system was entirely incompatible with them. If you tuned in at home, you didn't see a rainbow—you saw a flickering, scrambled mess. CBS actually had to set up special monitors in their own studios and public galleries just so an audience could verify the colors actually existed!
• Studio Sauna: To get enough light for the primitive color cameras, the studio was packed with so much high-powered equipment that it turned into an oven. It was so hot that day that the studio floors literally started to buckle and warp while the actors were performing!

It was the ultimate 'fake it till you make it' moment: a star-studded, colorful spectacle that 99.9% of the country saw as grey static, performed by celebrities who were essentially melting into the floorboards. Talk about a bright idea!
