On July 5, 1946, the world of swimwear changed forever—and it was literally "explosive." French mechanical engineer Louis Réard introduced the world's first modern bikini at a public pool in Paris, and the backstory is as bizarre as the outfit was tiny.

Why it was a total bombshell:

• Atomic Origins: Réard named the garment after Bikini Atoll, the site where the U.S. was conducting nuclear bomb tests. He figured his design would cause a similar "atomic" reaction in the public—and he wasn't wrong!
• The Model Crisis: The suit was so scandalous (it was basically just 30 square inches of fabric) that no professional fashion models would agree to wear it. They were worried about their reputations.
• The Nude Dancer: To save the launch, Réard had to hire Micheline Bernardini, a 19-year-old nude dancer from a Paris casino. She had no qualms about the skimpy design and even posed holding a tiny matchbox to prove the entire suit could be folded up and tucked inside it.

While the Vatican declared it "sinful" and several countries banned it from their beaches, Bernardini received over 50,000 fan letters almost overnight. Talk about a fashion risk that didn't "bomb"!
