The Billboard That Became a Star

On July 13, 1923, the most famous real estate advertisement in history was officially dedicated. Originally reading HOLLYWOODLAND, it was never meant to be a permanent landmark—it was actually a temporary marketing stunt intended to last only 18 months to help sell suburban housing lots.

The 'L' of a Crash

The sign was so big it needed a live-in caretaker, a man named Albert Kothe, who lived in a cabin right behind the letters. One night in the early 1930s, Albert allegedly had a bit too much 'medicinal' beverage, hopped in his 1928 Ford Model A, and accidentally drove it right off the cliff. He crashed directly into the letter 'H', destroying it completely! While Albert survived with barely a scratch, his car and the letter 'H' were totaled.

A Legendary Makeover

By the late 1940s, the sign was a rusting eyesore with the 'LAND' portion falling apart. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce eventually stepped in to repair it but removed the 'LAND' to signify the district rather than the housing project. Today, it is a global icon of glamour, proving that if you stay in one spot long enough without permission, people will eventually treat you like a legend!
