The Day Canada Became a "Village" (Accidentally!)

On August 23, 1541, French explorer Jacques Cartier arrived in what is now Quebec for his third voyage. While he was busy hunting for gold and diamonds (which unfortunately turned out to be worthless quartz and iron pyrites), he managed to give a whole country its name by mistake. Cartier heard the local Iroquoian word "kanata", which simply means "village" or "settlement," and mistakenly applied it to the entire region.
