Farewell, United Colonies!

Ever looked at your government-assigned name and thought, "This just doesn't fit my brand anymore"? The Founding Fathers certainly felt that way on September 9, 1776.

Even after signing the Declaration of Independence two months earlier, the newborn nation was awkwardly going by the "United Colonies." It didn't take long for leaders to realize that calling yourself a bunch of "colonies" when you're actively fighting a war to not be colonies is a bit of a mixed message (Learn Bright).

To clear up the confusion, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution officially adopting the name the United States of America, swapping out the old "Colonies" title across all official commissions and paperwork (Holiday Insights).
