The Day Time Literally Vanished: The Great Calendar Leap
Did you know that in 1582, October 4th was a day that literally vanished from existence? In a move that would make any time traveler dizzy, Pope Gregory XIII decided that the Julian calendar was drifting out of sync with the solar year. To fix this, he ordered a massive calendar correction. When citizens in Italy, Poland, Portugal, and Spain went to sleep on the night of October 4, 1582, they woke up the next morning to find it was October 15! That is right—ten entire days were simply deleted from the calendar to realign the equinoxes. Imagine being a landlord trying to collect rent for those missing days or a birthday celebrant who suddenly had to wait an extra week and a half for their cake! It remains one of history's most bizarre 'lost' periods, all thanks to a papal decree that gave us the Gregorian calendar we still use today.
