The Day Houdini Took a Punch to History
While October 22nd is often associated with serious moments like the Cuban Missile Crisis [4, 10] or ancient solar eclipses [2, 7], it also marks one of the most bizarre and tragic 'what-if' moments in entertainment history. On October 22, 1926, the legendary escape artist Harry Houdini was in his dressing room when a university student asked if it was true that he could withstand any blow to the stomach. Before Houdini could properly prepare, the student delivered several unexpected, rapid-fire punches to his abdomen [1]. Houdini, who was already suffering from appendicitis, reportedly died just nine days later on Halloween [1]. It remains a strange and somber reminder that even the world's greatest escape artist couldn't dodge a surprise sucker punch!
