The Great Emu War: Australia's Feathered Fiasco

On November 2, 1932, the Australian military officially declared war on... emus. Following the Great Depression, veterans-turned-farmers in Western Australia were struggling with 20,000 emus migrating inland and destroying crops. Major G.P.W. Meredith of the Seventh Heavy Battery of the Royal Australian Artillery was deployed with Lewis machine guns to combat the flightless birds. The result? The emus proved to be tactical geniuses, scattering in small groups to avoid gunfire and displaying remarkable resilience. After firing thousands of rounds with very few confirmed 'casualties,' the military retreated in embarrassment. The emus had effectively won the war, leaving the Australian government to realize that fighting nature with heavy artillery is a losing battle.
